I was supposed to post about OOXML(Office Open XML-like MS Office) and ODF(Open Document Form-Google started it recently against MS Office. It is for free). Anyway, what I want to share is a new processor Intel made, Atom. Intel officially introduced Atom processor at the Shanghai International convention centre. As you see the name, it is much smaller than the previous one; its size is similar to Korean coin 10 won. This processor is being used for MID(Mobile Internet Device) now. Some Korean company already took or is going to take it into their product. The interest thing from this chip is that we can imagine our future life, and pocket-sized private portable computer will be coming out soon. MID has a great function like PC has, wireless internet and a battery lasting longer than PCs. Here are some concept pictures of the MID.
According to this chip, they also introduced a new kind of laptop- netbook. It is much cheaper than nomal laptop computers, but very useful to use just internet, simple application like MS Office and so on. This is smaller than laptop, but bigger than PDA and PMP. Difference between MID and netbook is that MID is for using information, and netbook is focused on internet. Actually, the divisions, which are MID, netbook, nettop is not really a new concept, but just made by Intel. MID is a product integrated with functions of PDA, PMP and navigation, and netbook and nettop are PCs which are specialized for internet, but the performance is low.
They aim at niche market where the people like to use Internet and simple application with cheaper price because those people do not need to buy a high functional PC. If their become successful, Intel will seize the portable device market as they did in PC market. The mark - Intel Atom will be a gurantee that the product is reliable and durable.
From those facts, what I guess is that the internet based company like Google can have the potential opportunity to drag attentions with innovated awesome application or platform for internet users. Google already made open application of MS Office type, and people can work without paying for MS Office application. Longer the time people use the internet, more MS will lose their market. That might be the reason MS wants to acquire Yahoo and jump into internet business successfully. /posted by 20500580
