7. Google Prototype for a Precision Image Search

True image recognition is a dream that a lot of computer companies have tried to pursue since a couple of year ago when the Internet took over user's desktops, and thanks to the growing bandwidth of the communications it became a little more possible to work on it.
Riya is one of those companies and it has created a site called Like.com which refers customers to shopping sites, makes it possible for a buyer to select a particular visual attribute, such as color or shape, and then be presented with similar products available from competing Internet sellers.

Now Google is going one step ahead and has presented at the International World Wide Web Conference in Beijing a tool called VisualRank, which is an algorithm for blending image-recognition software methods with techniques for ranking images that look similar.

Besides the uses for the war against terrorism and E-Commerce, there will be lot of benefits of having this technology in our computers, for instance I can think of trying to find a friend whom I lost contact before, I just can “show” the picture to Google VisualRank and it will retrieve for me lots of images and pictures where I can see where my friend has posted his pictures lately, I find for this useful, to name an example.
Finally, I think that Internet users should thanks Google for taking the lead in such endeavor, I know that there are thousands of team effort and millions of lines of code behind this technology, my hope it can be use for good purposes.
